Rameez Abbas

Former Editor and Publications Manager

Rameez Abbas was Editor and Publications Manager at the Migration Policy Institute, and was responsible for editing much the Institute's research and helping manage the publication process.

Previously, she was lecturer and program coordinator at the MA in Global Security Studies at Johns Hopkins University, where she taught courses on research methods and writing, South Asian politics, and the politics of the Muslim world.  She also advised masters’ theses and participated in program management.

Dr. Abbas earned a BA in government and politics from the University of Maryland and a PhD in political science from Johns Hopkins, where her work focused on migration and citizenship politics in India. Her research has been supported by the East West Center in Washington, and she was also awarded a Fulbright grant.

Internal migration spurred primarily by employment and marriage helps shape the economic, social, and political life of India’s sending and receiving regions. Labor migrants face myriad challenges, including restricted access to basic needs such as identity documentation and social entitlements. This article describes the barriers to integration that labor migrants face, and details the policy environment surrounding their integration challenges.
